LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - We meet up with some car hops on our first stop. The Sonic Drive In at 101 North University skates through their inspection with no critical violations.
Freshness is key as we continue on this trip of perfection, and the Subway at 2515 82nd knows all about it. They wrap up a perfect score.
The next stop at the top serves up a flawless inspection - just the way you like it. Whataburger at 4802 50th grills up a perfect score.
And our final top performer is under new ownership, but a familiar name on the Food for Thought list. "We've been working at it hard, and the hard work has finally paid off," Simon Castillo said.
His family took over J.C.'s Burritos at 6313 19th Street a few years ago, and after narrowly missing out on a perfect inspection several times - they now have the recipe down.
"We just clean as we go. That's the main thing. That way everything doesn't pile up."
The Castillo's also expanded their menu with items like menudo and enchiladas, but there's a customer favorite that pays homage to a basketball great - who's gave his permission and even dined at J.C.'s.
"The Bobby Knight (burrito) has been around since we been here. His been here once before. We have not removed it from the menu. It's one of our top sellers. It's sells. It comes with brisket, potatoes, onions, jalapenos and cheese."
No matter what you want, it's all made fresh right when you order. "It's just pretty much mama's home cooking. All the food is made with love, and I think that's what keeps brining all the people back. They just keep coming and coming. They love the hot sauce. They can't get enough of it. It's just hot - with no special recipe. You know, just the way my mom makes it I guess. The madder my dad makes her, the hotter it gets."
