Lubbock homeowner shoots attempted burglar

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Lubbock homeowner shot a potential burglar as the man was trying to enter his home on Monday afternoon.

The homeowner tells police that someone was trying to get into his home around 2:30 p.m. in the 3100 block of 45th Street. The intruder knocked at the front door, and then the back door, and when he tried to kick in the door, the homeowner shot the potential burglar with a shotgun.

The burglar was taken to University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and he remains in stable condition. "A person does have the right to defend their house and the contents from someone breaking in and specifically the law states against burglary." says Lt. Neal Barron of the Lubbock Police Department.

Homicide detectives were called out to the scene, however, Lt. Barron tells NewsChannel 11 that is standard in any situation that could turn into a homicide.

Police tell us that they spoke with the homeowner briefly, but he has since gone to talk with his lawyer. The police hope to talk with him later, so they can put together a warrant for the potential burglar's arrest.
