LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Treasure Downing, a Lubbock second grader, has survived more obstacles in his short life than most will endure in a lifetime. He was diagnosed with Leukemia. A stem cell transplant was his last resort. However this was not the first hurdle in Treasure's life.
Treasure's mother died of cancer when he was two. Then, after moving in with his grandparents, his grandmother died of cancer the next year. So, now it is just Treasure and his grandfather, Harvey. The two make a great team, Treasure is now cancer free, and they've been through a lot together.
Harvey has been selling Avon for a year now to make some extra money and to do business with the people he and Treasure have come to know best, their medical family at University Medical Center.
"One of the things I like that's nice is Avon has this coffee mug with a propeller at the bottom," says Dr. Anthony Cecalupo. "You press the button and it spins by itself. I bought four of them and even gave one to Dr. Jumper," he adds.
That's Dr. Cindy Jumper, Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Texas Tech Health Science Center. When she received her Avon mug, she never thought that Harvey would be more than just her Avon connection. This unlikely Avon team now has a new hurdle in their lives. Harvey has a bad spot on his lungs and Dr. Jumper says needs to come out, that, in itself, will be a challenge. Dr. Jumper explains, "Harvey has lung disease and emphysema. So that puts him even more at risk just surviving the surgery much less me taking out a part of his lung."
Even so, Tuesday morning, Harvey will be rolled into surgery. Ironically, one of his customers, Sandy, will step in to take care of Harvey's most important job, watching over Treasure until this sales team is back in business. Treasure and his grand-dad have a difficult road ahead with at least a few weeks of recovery after this major surgery. If you'd like to help with the medical bills, a fund has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank. Just ask for the Benefit for Treasure Medical Fund.
