LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – A campaign called "Room to Breathe," aims at preventing deaths in newborns. The campaign is supported by many of the Nation's pediatricians, including some right here in Lubbock. Dr. Jeremy Dalton, M.D., is a pediatrician at Covenant, and was our guest Tuesday on HealthWise at Five.
"We're trying to educate parents in the importance of placing babies on their backs to sleep in a bassinet or crib next to the bed, which is actually much safer than sleeping in the bed with them," said Dr. Dalton. "There have been four deaths in the Lubbock area, each in the last two years from babies who slept with their parents."
Dr. Dalton says another slogan in this campaign is "Dress the baby and not the bed." In other words, keep the bedding simple, no pillows, blankets or decorative bedding that might cover the baby's mouth and make it hard to breathe.
