LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – If we all just cut back on salt a little, we could save hundreds of thousands of lives, and billions of dollars in health care costs, every year.
Researchers at USC used a computer model to see what would happen if Americans cut 1,200 milligrams, or just half a teaspoon of salt from their diet every day. During the study they learned there would be up to 120,000 fewer cases of heart disease and 66,000 fewer strokes each year with a savings of between 10 to 24 billion dollars in healthcare costs.
Less salt drops the risk of high blood pressure, which has a ripple effect in preventing heart disease and strokes as well.
