LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – It's no secret that winter weather sucks the moisture out of our skin leaving it dry and cracked, which can be really painful. Dr. Eric Bernstein, a dermatologist, offers these tips on keeping your skin from cracking in cold weather.
He says use a mild cleanser like Dove, Olay, or Cedafil, something that won't strip the body of its natural oils. Then, when you get out of the shower, use a moisturizer even before you dry off so you can keep a thin coat of water on your body.
"The key is to put it on after the shower, while you're wet. That's probably the single most important part. Because it traps the water and pushes it into your skin," says Dr. Bernstein. He adds, "My favorite product for the winter - dermatologists' duct tape - is Aquaphor. It's like Vasoline -- only it's got lanolin and it traps water."
Dr. Bernstein says you don't have to spend a lot on a high dollar moisturizers, because the inexpensive ones work too. But he says, whatever you have, the trick is to use it often.
