Food for Thought Report 2.4

Posted:

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - They opened their doors three years ago, but if you don't know someone who's dined there, chance are you would probably drive right by without a second glance.

"We wanted to bring something a little different to Lubbock. We took what we thought was already here and then decided, we'll put our own twist on it, and that's what we've accomplished," owner and chef Jason Diehl said.

It's that dash of difference that makes Home Café at 3131 34th Street so popular with their customers, but it's their clean kitchen that puts them at the top of the list for the second time. "Everybody here is pretty pumped about doing it two times in a row. So, kudos goes to our staff and everybody for keeping up. We're definitely proud about that."

Something else Jason is proud of is what he calls modern home-style cooking - where everything is fresh, seasonal and made from scratch. "The breads, the pastas, the crackers, the soup - everything that you're eating is made by somebody here. If you've never had fresh pasta noodles, it really is different."

Jason's wife Kate, who is also a chef, creates the menu every morning using unique ingredients to craft the daily specials. "Maybe things that you wouldn't necessarily think of automatically, but it's something that we're familiar with. We are able to introduce people who aren't as familiar with a lot of the ingredients."

But for those who aren't ready to try anything too out of the ordinary, "We put our twists on maybe old classics or just to kind of make it a little different, a little fresh, little new, and it is. We don't want to be the same thing that you can get down the street."

Like their hamburger: "I know it's just a burger, but it's ground fresh, comes with a roasted garlic aioli and fresh mozzarella. A little bit different and it's served on ciabatta."

Now to another repeat top performer. Bigham's Smokehouse at 4302 19th smokes up a flawless inspection.

Next, the colonel would be proud as Kentucky Fried Chicken at 7601 82nd does their inspection right and it was another perfect shot for the Silver Bullet at 5145 Aberdeen.

It's a double dose of perfection for Taco Bell. Two locations make the list this week: 402 Ave. Q and 6512 82nd Street.

Finally, we wrap up this report with a sweet treat. Sugarbakers at 4601 S. Loop 289 is once again a top performer.
