LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – There is a Health Alert on pre-packaged salad greens from Consumer Reports.
They tested more than 200 different packages of salad greens including 16 big name brands, within the fresh dates posted on the package and discovered some potentially dangerous health concerns.
None of the pre-packaged salad greens contained the dangerous bacteria E-coli, Listeria or salmonella. But, many packages did contain high levels of other bacteria that revealed poor sanitation and fecal contamination. The report says many of the dirtiest salads had two things in common. They contained spinach and were close to the end of their "Use-By" dates.
The report suggests that if you buy a pre-packaged salad make sure that it is far away from that end date. And even if the package says its "Pre-Washed," you should always wash it again for your health safety.
