Concern Raised Over Texas Budget Cuts

Lawmakers are expressing concern over the state's efforts to offset a $10 billion budget shortfall by making massive cuts to education and social services. Some of the items that could be on the chopping block include eliminating the Children's Health Insurance Program, which offers a low-cost insurance for more than half a million children.

Also, slashing $2.8 billion from public education, effecting counseling programs, textbook purchases, and resulting in layoffs. And cutting $600 million from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice budget, which would scrap sex and drug offender treatment programs.
