Famous astronaut speaks in the Hub City

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A famous astronaut made his way to the Hub City Saturday to speak to local Boy Scouts celebrating the Boy Scouts of America's 100th birthday.

Captain Jim Lovell of Apollo 13, who is also an Eagle Scout, spoke at the Boy Scouts' banquet Saturday night. Lovell is most famous for his role in the American space age as the calm and careful commander of Apollo 13 who brought his crew safely back to earth after the craft suffered a explosion on its way to the moon. Tom Hanks portrayed Lovell in the movie Apollo 13.

Lovell had this advice for Boy Scouts, "Take seriously the program. Work hard on the various objectives from Tenderfoot all the way up to Eagle, and then get an incentive of what you really want to do."

Lovell said he's not sure when, but he does beleive the space program will eventually make it to Mars.
