LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – We all know that exercise is good for the mind and body, but if you're looking for a fun way to get fit, one of the hottest new trends is called Zumba. Some people even refer to these fitness classes as parties because even though it may seem like a big dance, you're mixing aerobic moves and resistance training while listening to salsa music.
"It works everything, it's cardio, it's toning, but the best part of Zumba, it works your core," said Patty Broan, a Zumba instructor. "You need a strong core for everything you do, it's functional fitness for lifting for walking for your back health."
Zumba classes started in Colombia in the mid nineties, but today there are an estimated five million people worldwide taking Zumba classes every week. Zumba classes are big at Texas Tech, but outside university life, anyone can take Zumba classes at the YWCA. The YWCA charges only $6 a class and it is even cheaper if you sign up for a fitness package, but anyone can try a Zumba class for free just to try it out. Please call the YWCA for class times and more information at (806) 792-2723.
