HUNTSVILLE, ALA - (ap) - The shooting tragedy on the University of Alabama - Huntsville campus left three dead, and three injured. A biology professor is in police custody in Huntsville after Friday afternoon's shooting.
Police say the shooter opened fire during a biology faculty meeting in the Huntsville campus science building after learning that she would not get tenure. The Huntsville Times is identifying the suspect as Dr. Amy Bishop, a Harvard University trained Neuroscientist. According to the newspaper, Bishop is in custody and her husband has also been detained for questioning, but neither has been charged with a crime.
The three people killed were all faculty members, as are two of the people injured. A third person hurt is a staff member.
Mayor Tommy Battle said "this is a sad day for Huntsville, for the Tennessee valley, for America. This is another one of those senseless acts that you see. Our hearts and our prayers are with all the victims, the victims' families, each of the people affected by this and the whole county."
A University official says no students were involved in the shooting.
