The City of Lubbock hopes one of its water tanks can last another five and a half months. If not, the state may force Southwest Lubbock residents into water rationing.
The tank in question lies underneath tennis courts at 82nd and Memphis. The Texas Environmental Commission on Quality inspected the tank and had some concerns about cracks that could cause groundwater to leak into it. The city repaired those cracks and is requesting that the TECQ allow the tank to be in operation through the summer. Then the city would shut the tank down and start construction on a new water tank this fall.
City Engineer Ches Carthel says he expects the TECQ to respond to the city's request within the next couple of weeks.
