LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Lubbock United Blood Service is asking residents to find the hero in you. For most of this month they have had a critical shortage of blood donations. If one person goes to United Blood Service and donates whole blood it could save three lives.
"We hear that one of the biggest reasons why people who generally donate don't donate is that they thought someone else would do it," said Les Long from the United Blood Service.
This month they found themselves on the critical appeals list because of their shortage of blood. Many Lubbock residents don't realize the need for blood, until they need it, but the donation process is fast and simple.
"I try to do it as often as I can whenever I have free time," said Garrett Behrends.
Behrends is a student at Lubbock Christian University who tries to give blood twice a year. Each time, he signs in and then goes to an interview room to start the process.
"They take a sample of your blood to make sure there's nothing wrong with it then they ask you some questions to help the process," said Behrends.
It only takes about twenty to thirty minutes.
"People are scared about the needles and how big they are, it's really not that bad. It's just like a little pin prick and that's about all you feel," said Behrends.
Many people give blood on a regular basis, but it's just not enough. So United Blood Service asks you to step up and give the gift of life because no one wants to think they or a loved one could end up in the hospital, and not get the unit of blood they need.
