LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - January unemployment numbers are in, and Lubbock saw the highest unemployment rate in at least ten years.
Lubbock's unemployment rate jumped from 5.5% to 6.2% in January, and it is more than a full point higher than this time last year.
The Lubbock Economic Development Alliance (LEDA) says January is typically a high unemployment month because seasonal workers lose their jobs after Christmas, and they think we'll see an improvement in the February numbers.
"The trend is they start going back down February, March, April, May, and that's a really good time for us. They don't go back up again until the summer months, and that's always been a trend too because the contract labor work with schools," says Terri Patterson, L.E.D.A, Director of Workforce Development
Although this is a record high number for Lubbock, we are still relatively low.
Lubbock has the second lowest rate in Texas, and the 19th lowest in the nation.
