Making their first ever appearance at the State Tournament in Austin, the Smyer Lady Cats made a great first impression, beating Martin's Mill 49-41 early Saturday morning to take the Class 1A Division I State Championship.
Haley Fowler, who was West Texas's leading scorer regardless of class, tallied 35 against Martin's Mill who won the state title in 2006 and 2008.
The Lady Cats defense caused problems, allowing the Lady Mustangs only 2 points in the second quarter opening up an 11 point lead.
Fowler was 14 of 22 from the floor in leading the Lady Cats and added 13 rebounds. Nikki Gholson added 6 and Jordan Locke 4.
Martin's Mill's star player Emily Williams was 4 of 17 from the floor and only scored 13.
Smyer Head Coach Leland Bearden wins his first State title in over 20 years of coaching. With Haley Fowler only a Sophomore, and 1 Senior in the starting lineup, the Lady Cats future looks bright.
#10 Smyer finished 36-3, battling and getting out of the brutal Region I by knocking off #3 Anton and #2 Sudan
