LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Using your cell phone in a school zone could soon be illegal in Lubbock.
The Texas Legislature passed the law in September. It says that if you are in a school zone and moving, you cannot used a call phone unless it is hands free.
In order to enforce this law, signs must be present. The cost to put up the signs in Lubbock, Lubbock Cooper, and Frenship School Districts is $75,000.
The chairman of the City of Lubbock Citizens Traffic Commission says they discussed this new law at their meeting Tuesday.
"We voted unanimously to ask the city council to go ahead with this as soon as possible and to allocated those funds as soon as they possibly can," says Chairman of the CTC, Ronnie Sowell.
But is this really an issue, are cell phone distractions making school zones more dangerous? Tonight on NewsChannel 11 at 10, we hear from one school district about this issue.
