LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - It's been exhilarating to watch our local and area basketball teams the past few weeks. Three teams have brought state champion titles home to their communities.
The Estacado Matadors won the first state title for any high school boys team in Lubbock in four decades. The Smyer Lady Cats have also put there small town on the map with a state championship in class 1A. Finally, Nazareth, who is no stranger to state championships, has won it's fifth since 2002.
Consider this: It's great to see the Lubbock area turning out the best teams in the state and even better to see the excitement on the faces of these new champions.
The coaches and administration have done an excellent job giving these teams a place in history. And while it's great exposure for the school, for Lubbock and West Texas, the real success is the example these athletes have set for future generations. They are proof of what can be accomplished with hard work, discipline, and dedication.
So congratulations to all our state title winners this year. And remember, you are much more than champions, you are now role models.
