LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A new study by the CDC finds one in six Americans is infected with herpes, making it one of the most common STD's in the country.
Jamie Parker with the Lubbock Health Department attended a national STD conference last week where the CDC first released the results. She says they are finding the biggest problem is that most people don't even know they have herpes.
"The primary problem is that even though that many people test positive for Herpes Type 2, they don't show symptoms, because about 80% of people who carry the virus have no symptoms or any way of knowing that they have it," says Jamie Parker, RN.
Jamie says herpes blisters are extremely painful. If you are not showing signs of herpes but suspect that you may have it you can get a blood test from a private clinic. The Lubbock Health Department can only check for herpes if you are already showing blisters, usually on the outside of the mouth or anywhere from the belly button to the mid-thigh.
There's no cure but medication can reduce the severity and shorten the length of the outbreak.
