LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A big surprise for a Lubbock veteran Saturday who thought he was headed to a birthday party, but it turned out to be much more.
Emmett Broderson served in the Navy during World War II and never received any of his navy service honors. Saturday afternoon, his family planned a surprise ceremony for him. "It just shocked me; I wondered what is all this Navy bunch here. Then, I saw him and said there is something going on, and I don't know about it," Broderson said.
During the ceremony the Navy presented Broderson with his long over due awards. "Oh this is a great honor for me. In the rush to demobilized the conclusion of World War II many of the veteran's sacrifices were over looked, and just having the opportunity to do this, like I said, is a great honor for me," U.S. Navy Retired Commander Mike Cochrane said.
Broderson says he isn't sure where he will put his medals, but he is very proud to have them. After the ceremony the Broderson family took Emmett home where they celebrated his birthday after all.
