LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – It only takes a second for lives to be changed forever because of a traumatic brain injury.  March is Brain Injury Awareness Month and the number one emphasis in this campaign is to encourage people to buckle up.  Driving without a seat belt or the improper use of a car seat can be devastating in an accident, but HealthWise at 5, this sober reminder from a pediatric neurosurgeon who says he sees way too many accidents waiting to happen with kids in shopping carts.

"It is one of the most embarrassing pictures for a neurosurgeon when he goes out to shop and sees parents with toddlers sitting on the cart seat and they didn't buckle or they're sitting or standing  or scooting on the shopping cart," said Laslo Nagy, M.D., a Pediatric Neurosurgeon at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Nagy also warns against shaken baby syndrome.  He says children, particularly babies, are delicate, and should never be shaken or you risk a serious brain injury.
