LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Experience Life Church kicks off its ten day service projects by giving 50 local kids from the Boys and Girls Club a shopping spree.
Over the next ten days leading up to Easter, Experience Life volunteers take on a number of service projects around Lubbock. "We've got 21 scheduled for the next ten days. We're going to be going out every day all over the city just serving people and doing what we can to help them," said project coordinator Jill Heflin.
To start off the projects, more than 50 volunteers from Experience Life gathered at the Wal-Mart located at Quaker and the South Loop waiting to be paired with the boys and girls chosen for a $100 shopping spree. For those two hours, the Wal-Mart was completely filled with volunteers in blue shirts and excited kids spending their money on things they need.
"I was just so excited I couldn't breathe," said nine-year-old Gabriella Guerrero who bought new school clothes with her money. Two volunteers took Gabriella and her six-year-old sister Audrey around the store filling their baskets with clothes and new shoes. "I got some shirts and I got some shorts and I also just got pretty, pretty clothes that I really like," said Gabriella holding up her new floral green shirt.
Altogether the church spent $5,000 on the 50 kids. "It just feels so good to see the kid's faces light up and baskets full of clothes and toys. It makes me want to cry just thinking about it, just seeing the joy on their faces. I think I'm the one who's been blessed more than these kids," said Heflin.
