Red Raiders Have First Scrimmage of Spring

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech conducted its first scrimmage Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium, and also held its first workout in full pads four practices into the spring season. The workout gave the coaches, and fans, their first glimpse of the Red Raiders in a game simulation under the new coaching regime.

"It was a typical first scrimmage," head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "At times we looked good and other times we looked like a team in its first scrimmage. I thought our quarterbacks did a nice job of finding receivers and the offensive line provided good protection. Defensively, we saw a lot of things we liked. Once we see the film, we'll have a better idea of where we are. But, I thought it was a good start for our fourth workout of the spring."

The Red Raiders return a talented group from the 2009 season, but most eyes are on the battle at quarterback. Seniors Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield took a bulk of the snaps as Sheffield finished the day with 222 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-25 passing. He also ran for another score. Potts completed 13-of-25 passes for 141 yards and a score. Both worked with the ones and twos during the scrimmage. Sophomore Seth Doege added 35 yards and a passing score on 5-of-12 passing, while redshirt freshman Jacob Karam was also 5-of-12 for 49 yards.

Tramain Swindall led all receivers with 103 yards on four receptions and scored a touchdown on the scrimmage's opening drive. Jacoby Franks and Aaron Crawford followed with 74 and 61 yards and a touchdown apiece.

On the ground, Crawford led all backs with 63 yards on 10 carries and another score, while Harrison Jeffers and Eric Stephens added 66 and 23 yards, each on six rushes. Baron Batch gathered 13 yards on six carries.

Cornerback LaRon Moore paced the defense with seven stops, while safeties Brett Dewhurst and Franklin Mitchem added six tackles each. Redshirt freshmen Aundrey Barr, Pearlie Graves and Brandon Mahoney, along with junior Sam Fehoko, each recorded sacks. Dewhurst and walk-on defensive back Sawyer Vest grabbed the defenses two interceptions.

The Red Raiders get back to practice Monday at 3 p.m. at Jones AT&T Stadium. Practices are open to the public.
