LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Lubbock Police are investigating a fatal car accident involving a pedestrian early Friday morning.
It happened at the 2600 block of Slaton Highway across from the Chisum Travel Center, around 5:00 a.m.
Police identified the pedestrian killed as 37-year-old Gerald Frederic. Police say Frederic was walking east bound on Slaton Highway when a 2002 Ford Ranger pickup hit him.
"A rather graphic scene. Whenever we did arrive, the pedestrian from what we can tell so far, was walking in a lane of traffic. From the preliminary investigation that's been done so far it does seem that he had his back to the traffic," says Captain Gregory Stevens of the Lubbock Police Department.
Police are investigating if Frederic was hit by multiple vehicles that may have attributed to his death. "The first collision is what we start with, and anything subsequent to that would be part of the investigation to determine where exactly the individual suffered what kind of injuries," said Stevens.
Police also say low visibility may have been a factor in the accident. "The driver has been in contact with our investigators, and again they are working through this scene here. It's a relatively low light conditions here, and so there's a lot of contributing factors that are going to come into play," said Stevens.
Investigators believe Frederic's death was an accident and say they'll continue to investigate why he was walking on the highway so early in the morning.
