LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – More than 18 million Americans have sleep apnea, which can lead to hypertension, heart disease, mood and memory problems.  It's not just a lot of snoring, sleep apnea occurs when muscles in the throat relax and block air from the lungs. The standard therapy, called c-pap works for a lot of people, but some patients don't like taking the c-pap with them when they travel. Now, a new little device provides an option for those patients.

"All you have to do is put one in each nostril," said Maria Tonkiss, a sleep apnea patient.

It's called Proven and it uses microvalve technology.  When a patient exhales, the valve increases pressure in the airway to keep it open.

"I see how the patient is doing by having them come back within a couple of days. If I want them to go home with an oxygen monitor to make sure that it's working effectively, I can do that," said Jay Berland, M.D., a pulmonologist.

"Also, when I travel with friends, they're very happy, too, because I'm not snoring," said Tonkiss.

The Provent Therapy is sold by prescription. It's about $150 for a 30 day supply. If you'd like to know more about Provent, ask your doctor, go to www.proventtherapy.com or call 1-866-542-8510.
