2010 Census Bus Tour stops in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD0 - The 2010 Census Bus Tour made a stop at South Plains Mall in Lubbock Saturday to promote the importance of being counted.  The deadline to mail back your form was Thursday. Now, Census takers must prepare to go door to door.

April 1st has passed, but the U.S. Census Bureau is determined to get everyone accounted for in 2010.  The next step for the Census team is to hire more than 1,000 employees to go door to door to make sure people fill out the questionnaire.

Josh Silva with the 2010 Census Committee says the door to door process doesn't come cheap.

"It's costing the tax payer money. It costs any where from $80 to $90-million to get a 1% increase as we go knocking on doors. So, that's why we are here. It's much more efficient, much more cost effective to get the people aware that they need to get their Census Questionnaires in if they haven't done it," Silva said.

More than half of Lubbock has mailed in their Census, but those who haven't should expect a knock at their door sometime between now through July.  You can still fill out your Census and drop it in the mail to save you from having someone come to your home.

If you have questions or problems with filling out your Census, you can call 1-866-872-6868 for assistance.
