Some Lubbock area Catholics react to the latest church scandal this Easter Sunday

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - At the Vatican, the Pope hasn't said a word about the most recent sexual abuse scandal rocking the Catholic Church, but that hasn't kept others, including priests, from speaking their mind on the issue. Dr. Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said, "an institution so deeply bound into the life of a society, suddenly becoming, suddenly losing all credibility - that's not just a problem for the church, it is a problem for everybody in Ireland."

On the South Plains many faithful Catholics, like David Hinojosa, spent Easter morning at Mass with their families. "We find ourselves disturbed by what has become a public humiliation of our faith. Today, Easter Sunday, it's the most joyous day of the Catholic Church and for many Christians around the world. We're just trying to celebrate with many Easter traditions which include going to church and spending time with our families," said Hinojosa.

Local Catholics say it's important they do not let this man-made scandal overshadow the true spiritual meaning of Easter. "During this time, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the saving grace of the resurrection of Jesus, which is the Easter celebration, it is our hope, and it's what will sustain us as Catholics and our church," said Hinojosa.

Lubbock church leaders like Father David Cruz say they are disappointed by the actions of those priests who abused parishioners. "It's disheartening, and to some degree discouraging," he said.  However, Cruz says their actions do not shake his faith in the Catholic Church or its leadership. "Of course their will be critics, and there will be people that will disagree with the way that some things have been handled by the official church. We still have to love those people," said Cruz.

"The Catholic Church and the Catholic faith are bigger and greater and stronger than this one particular issue or problem," Cruz added.

Despite the scandal, Hinojosa will continue to bring his family to mass every Sunday, and Father Cruz will spend this Easter the same way he's spent every other.  In faithful worship.

Though the full scope of the investigation is not clear, the information requests make evident at least some of the areas that Mueller and his team of prosecutors intend to look into and also reveal a strong interest in certain of Trump's actions as president.
