LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – April is STD awareness month, so how common are Sexually Transmitted Diseases in the Lubbock area and who is most at risk?
"The most common STD's are always going to be Chlamydia across the nation. Here in Lubbock we have had an increase in the HIV and syphilis, which has been a little bit of a concern with the health officials," said Jamie Parker, R.N., with the Lubbock Health Dept. "The under 25 age group is a great concern, they estimate that approximately one in two people that are sexually active before the age of 25 will have an STD and one in four teenagers and adolescence under the age of 25 are diagnosed with an STD every year."
If you think you may need to be tested for an STD, call the Lubbock Health Department for clinic times at (806) 775-2933. Every Wednesday during April, Jamie will be discussing STDS on HealthWise @ 5. If you have a personal question about an STD or one of the symptoms, send your question to firstname.lastname@example.org . Jamie will keep it confidential but answer all those questions on April 28th.
