LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – A local Lubbock Cooper High School senior will have a full professional sponsorship with Cinch Jeans and a scholarship with the Panola College rodeo team after a signing ceremony Thursday morning.

Eighteen-year-old bull rider Chandler Bownds is the youngest to be sponsored by Cinch. "It's an accomplishment to me, and the rest of my family. So, I'm pretty excited," said Bownds after the signing.

Bownds said he's been riding bulls since he was 10 years old after watching his mentor Lyndal Hurst bucking bulls. "I went over there and saw him bucking bulls and wanted to get on one so I did. I guess it stuck," said Bownds.

With multiple championships under Bownds' belt, Panola rodeo coach said he believes Bownds is the number one bull riding recruit in the nation, and hopes he can bring Panola their first national championship.

Hurst said Bownds may be small for his age but there's no doubt in his mind he will do well over the next few years. "He listens well. He tries hard. He's extremely tough. Pound for pound he's as tough as any guy out there," said Hurst.

Bownds will start Panola next Fall.
