LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Thursday, April 08, is Child Abuse Awareness Day and the focus in part is on Lubbock, since our city has an unfortunate distinction.

"We have high numbers, it's higher than the state average, last year there were about almost 1,500 children confirmed victims," said Patti Patterson, M.D., with the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center's Department of Pediatrics.  "The sad part of that is we know that a lot of children who are victims of neglect and abuse never reach the system."

Dr. Patterson says child abuse is most common is kids under age four.  If you suspect child abuse or neglect, the hotline to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services is 1-800-252-5400.
