Hundreds take steps to fight child abuse

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Hundreds of people on the South Plains pulled out their running shoes for a good cause Saturday as Tech Theta hosted their 5th Annual Speak Up For Kids Casa 5-K.

The event raises money for Court Appointed Special Advocates of the South Plains. Organizers hope the event also raises awareness about child abuse, because last year the Lubbock area ranked highest in the state for confirmed victims of child abuse.

"That's never a list you want to be number one on, and unfortunately our area has continued to place number 1,2, or 3 in the last several years. There's a huge issue with child abuse in our area, right here where we all live. It's not just a certain part of town. It's people who live down the street from us or a few blocks over," CASA Development Director Rose Carkeet said.

CASA volunteers serve as advocates for children in foster care as they go through the court system. April, by the way, is Child Abuse Awareness Month.
