Red Raiders Beat Oklahoma State 5-4

STILLWATER, Okla. – Junior catcher Jeremy Mayo belted two home runs and the Red Raiders got outstanding pitching from Bobby Doran and Chad Bettis as Texas Tech evened up this three-game series with Oklahoma State with a 5-4 victory on Saturday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

The win moves Texas Tech to 16-18 on the season and to 5-6 in Big 12 Conference play while Oklahoma State drops to 18-11 overall and to 3-5 in league play.

Oklahoma State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as they capitalized on a shaky start by Doran in the bottom of the first inning.  OSU got back-to-back singles from Davis Duren and Tom Belza to start the frame and a sacrifice fly by Mark Ginther gave the Cowboys the early advantage.

Tech didn't waste any time answering the Cowboy scoring as an RBI double by Michael Reed in the top of the second evened things up at 1-1.  Mayo led off the inning with a walk and then Reed dropped a ball off the wall in right-center and that allowed Mayo to score all the way from first.

In the fourth, Mayo gave Tech its first lead of the series when he blasted a one-out solo home run over the left field wall to put the Red Raiders in the lead 2-1.  Five batters later, freshman second baseman Jamodrick McGruder drew a bases loaded walk to extend the Tech lead to two runs (3-1).

OSU's Nicolas Rosthenhausler needed just one swing in the bottom half of the fourth to tie things up as he deposited a two-run home run to left field and that tied the game at 3-3.

Reed drove in his second run of the game in the fifth inning to break the tie and then Mayo gave Tech a two-run cushion with his second home run of the day in the top of the seventh.  Mayo's home run was his sixth of the year and gave Tech a 5-3 lead.

Oklahoma State plated one run on a Tech error in the seventh and threatened again in the eighth but Tech closer Chad Bettis shut the door on the Cowboy rally.

Bobby Doran (2-2)  turned in his best outing of the year as he held a potent OSU offense to just three runs on four hits and struckout four over 6 1/3 innings for the win.  Chad Bettis held OSU to just one unearned run over the final 2 2/3 innings for his fifth save of the year.

Texas Tech and Oklahoma State will meet for the rubber match of this three-game series on Sunday afternoon.  First pitch at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium is set for 1 p.m.

When you bring up Texas Tech Quarterback Nic Shimonek to any coach or player, they will most likely have something great to say about the Red Raider gunslinger. His work ethic, his leadership, and his mentality that he brings to the football field every day. Might be one of the things they would say about the Texas Tech quarterback.
