Fewer options for late tax filers

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - On tax day, you have until midnight to get your return post marked, and there is only one post office in Lubbock that will has extended tax day hours.

In the past the postal service has kept a few locations open, but this year they decided to only open the Lubbock Mail Processing Station at 1515 Crickets Avenue because of decreased demand.

"Everybody now days seems to file their taxes electronically, and it's the decrease in the actual people mailing their taxes," said Lubbock Postmaster, Randy Turner.

The sorting station does not sell stamps, so if you plan to file after hours make sure you have those beforehand.

Volunteers will be available to help low to moderate income people and senior citizens finish their returns. If you are interested, you can go to the Community Coalition of Assistance Volunteers office until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. Their office is at 5601 Avenue Q.

If you owe taxes and cannot pay the full amount, the IRS asks you to still pay as much as you can now. If you fail to pay at least 90% of what you owe, you could be subject to penalties.
