Rain or shine, some Saturday events go on as planned

Car show honors little boy who saved four lives with organ donation

The third annual Toadbucket Nationals Classic Car And Motorcycle Show will be Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the South Plains Mall. The event honors Christopher Barnes, 4, of Floydada who died in 2007. A written statement says Christopher saved the lives of four people through organ and tissue donation. Admission to the public is free. Proceeds from those who entered vehicles will benefit LifeGift, which has a regional office in Lubbock. LifeGift promotes organ donation.

City Councilman holds public "Coffee With Citizens" Saturday

LUBBOCK, TX (PRESS RELEASE) - District 3 City Councilmember Todd Klein will be hosting a Coffee with Citizens on Saturday, April 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the United Market Street, located at 50th Street & Indiana Avenue. All members of the public are invited to attend.

TTU Red and Black Football Game

The game is at Jones Stadium at 1:00 p.m. Admission is $5. Texas Tech students get in free with a student ID. Ponchos are permitted, but umbrellas are not.

Local kids learn robotics on TTU campus

Texas Tech hosts a robotics event for young people called GEAR or Get Excited About Robotics. The event is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Texas Tech Rec Center. A written statement says robotics teams from nine elementary schools and 12 middle schools will comprise the 200-300 participants. Specially selected Texas Tech engineering freshmen have organized the hands-on activity for participants.

Triathlon event draws 100+ colleges to Buffalo Springs

Up to 900 competitors from all over the nation converge on Buffalo Springs Lake Saturday for the USA Triathlon National Collegiate Championship. A written statement says more than 100 colleges will be represented in the competition that features a 1,500-meter lake swim, 40-kilometer bike ride, and 10-kilometer run. The Collegiate National Championship starts at 9:00 a.m., and a Collegiate Sprint (a 500-meter swim, 17.6-mile bike ride, and 5-kilometer run) will start at 12:30 p.m. An awards ceremony will be 6:00 p.m. Saturday in the Overton Hotel. Visit Lubbock estimates a local economic impact of just less than $1 million from the triathlon.

Join the Movement on the beautiful Texas Tech Campus. Please note that the start/finish line has moved. Registration and start/finish will be at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion located at the Southwest end of Jones AT&T Stadium. Walkers will have their choice of a 1 mile or 4 mile route winding through campus. Lunch will be provided for all walkers and volunteers. Check-in opens at 8:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 10:00 a.m.

6th Annual World Championship Buffalo Wing Cookoff at Buffalo Springs Lake

Categories include, chicken, brisket, pork spare ribs, buffalo wings, peoples choice, jackpot beans, and best party camp. $6 BBQ wristbands for meat sampling. This does not include gate admission. First judging starts at 11:00 a.m.

Former Red Raider to have his Jersey retired on Saturday

Kal Segrist, the fifth baseball coach to lead the Red Raiders, will have his jersey formally retired in a pre game ceremony on Saturday, April 17th prior to Texas Tech's Big 12 Conference game against the University of Oklahoma. Texas Tech and Oklahoma are scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. first pitch on Saturday. Should inclement weather makes changes to Tech's schedule on Saturday, the retirement ceremony will be postponed to a later date.


There have been some cancellations due to weather. The events cancelled for the day are:

  • Fly and Fling Rescheduled to May 22 - Due to the rain, Parks and Recreation's FMX Fly and Fling has been cancelled for Saturday and is being rescheduled to Saturday, May 22, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at McAlister Park.
  • March of Dimes March for Babies! has been rescheduled for May 8th due to flooding at Mackenzie Park. The start time will be at 9:30 a.m.
