Local four year old who saved four lives remembered

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Saturday the third annual Toad Bucket National Car and Motorcycle Show came to Lubbock, helping to raise awareness on the need for organ donors.

The car show was dedicated in memory of Lubbock's Christopher Barnes. He was only four years old when a car accident claimed his life in January of 2007.

"Our son was the life of the party. He loved cars. That's why we do the car show. He loved seeing classic cars, muscle cars; he loved every aspect of it," said Christopher's mother Gail Barnes.

Christopher's life was short lived but his little legacy continues living in other ways. At only four years old, Christopher helped save four lives.

Two men in Dallas received Christopher's kidneys; one of them was in their last stages of dialysis. A little boy in Dallas was given his liver, and a little in girl in California finally got her new heart. "Christopher continues to live through other people," said Father Jody Barnes.

After meeting one of the transplant recipients, the Barnes family began raising awareness and money through the car shows. "We signed up I think about 30 people last year to be organ and tissue donors through the car show alone," said Gail.

There's more than 106,000 people waiting on the national transplant donor list, and more than 9,000 are in Texas. Yet, Texas has one of the lowest ranked donor registries in the nation.

Just one person can save up to eight lives through organ donations and enhance another 50 lives through tissue donations.
