LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Sunday night, the Texas Department of Transportation reduced north and southbound traffic on Loop 289 to one lane in each direction from 34th Street to Frankford Avenue. Traffic can expect to be in a one lane configuration for the next 12 to 15 months.
Crews removed overhead sign trusses at the intersection of 19th Street and the loop. They also closed the northbound loop to westbound 19th cloverleaf exit. Northbound loop traffic wanting to go west on 19th will need to use the u-turn lane located at Frankford.
The lane reductions and ramp closure will allow the contractor to begin widening the loop from 4 to 6 lanes and begin work on the 19th intersection. All frontage road lanes will be open to traffic.
This work is part of the West Loop 289 Project that will make more than $17 million of improvements, including widening the loop from four to six lanes, rebuilding the 19th Street Overpass, adding continuous frontage roads, and concrete paving to 19th.
Work will take place weather permitting.
