LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Having a tattoo used to be the sign of a rebel today, it's more a sign of the times, but before you pick a print for your arm, or ankle or whatever, dermatologist Susan Taylor says many of her patients simply tell her they've outgrown their tattoos and want to get rid of them. That's why she wants people to know before they get artistic that it's not easy or pleasant to make that ink disappear.
"I see patients who have tattoo regret all the time," said Susan Taylor, M.D., a dermatologist. "Sometimes the laser works better on certain dyes, certain colors of the tattoo than others."
There are new lasers with three different wave lengths that are supposed to be able to target more colors of ink to help them fade. Even so, it takes multiple laser treatments to make a tattoo disappear, which is expensive in itself and Dr. Taylor says remember there is no guarantee you'll be tattoo free later, if you decide you don't like it.
