LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - New developments in the investigation into problems with Lubbock's Instrument Landing System (ILS). You'll remember interference forced the cancellation of dozens of flights at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport (LPSIA) back in February. Now, the Federal Communications Commission reports three Lubbock radio stations caused some of the problems.

The FCC issued two notices of violation on April 14th.  The reports cite KLLL, KONE, and KMMX.  According to the reports, an inspector from the Dallas office of the FCC found the problem with KONE and KMMX on February 24th.

The KONE transmitter sits 14-miles south of the LPSIA runway and also sends a KMMX signal. The inspector found the transmitter produced what's called "spurious emissions" which are signals outside the station's assigned channel that are not deliberate.

The report says those signals interfered with the ILS frequency and appear to be the cause of at least one report of problems with the landing system.  That report states an engineer for the stations fixed the problem.

The second report states the inspector found similar problems with the KLLL transmitter the following day, on February 25th. That transmitter is nine miles south of the LPSIA runway. The report says a station engineer also fixed that problem.

Now, the owner of the radio stations, Wilkes License Company, must explain each violation and how it's been fixed to the FCC, plus how they'll make sure it doesn't happen again.

The Federal Aviation Administration also found arcing electrical signals caused problems with the ILS.  Xcel Energy and Lubbock Power and Light fixed those issues earlier this year.
