PLAINVIEW, TX (KCBD) -

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Hale County jury deliberated for two hours Friday morning before convicting Sacarias Dee Peña III of murder in the 2008 shooting death of another prison guard Christopher Sanchez, according to the Plainview Daily Herald.

Jury selection started on Tuesday morning in the Hale County trial of a former prison guard who was charged and indicted in November of 2008. Sacarias Dee Pena III, 32, was indicted in November of 2008 for the murder of Christopher Sanchez, 28, of Floydada.

Neighbors told KCBD NewsChannel 11 they heard as many as six gun shots on the morning of November 21st. They called 911 around 6:30 a.m.  One of the bullets missed its mark and went through the window of the house across the street, waking up the people who live there, and several other neighbors.  Police arrived and arrested Pena in his front yard, where the shooting took place. An emergency response crew took the victim, Sanchez, to Covenant Hospital in Plainview where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the two men knew each other. They both worked in the prison system, and were both involved with the same woman. "We know there was a history between Mr. Sanchez, the victim, and Mr. Pena's ex-wife, and it was probably a development of that," said Captain Michael Carroll of the Plainview Police Department in 2008.

Sanchez was an employee of the Montford Prison Unit in Lubbock, while Pena was employed at the Formby Prison unit in Plainview.

Pena faces anywhere from five years to life in prison. The punishment phase of Peña's trial is underway.

Peña is being tried in 64th District Court before Judge Rob Kinkaid.
