Red Raiders even series with 11-8 victory over Kansas

Posted:

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Texas Tech broke an 8-8 tie with three runs in the top of the eighth inning and closer Chad Bettis shut the Jayhawks down the rest of the way to give the Red Raiders an 11-8 win over Kansas on Sunday morning.  The game was the continuation of Saturday's game that was suspended with Tech leading 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Texas Tech improves to 23-20 on the season and to 9-8 in Big 12 Conference play while Kansas falls to 25-15-1 overall and to 6-7-1 in league play.

Junior right fielder Bonham Hough gave Tech a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth on Saturday night when he led off the inning with a solo home run to left-center field.  Tech went quietly the rest of the inning and the game then went into a rain delay at 7:13 p.m. and was officially postponed at 8 p.m.

Tech watched its one-run lead dissipate in the bottom of the sixth as the Jayhawks exploded for five runs to take a 6-2 lead.  Bobby Doran, who started the game on Saturday, returned for Tech on Sunday and logged two shutout innings before running into trouble in the sixth.  Doran retired the first batter on a strikeout but then gave up a solo home run to Brian Heere that tied the game at 2-2.  After a walk of Jimmy Waters, Doran was pulled from the game in favor of Chad Bettis.  Bettis ended up allowing four hits in the inning which helped the Jayhawks plate five runs.

The Red Raider offense went to work in the top of the sixth and grabbed the lead back as Tech pounded out six runs to take an 8-6 advantage.  Michael Reed drove in two runs with a double while Jeremy Mayo plated in three with a three-run home run to center.

After Kansas tied the game with a two-run home run from Tony Thompson in the bottom of the seventh, the Red Raiders responded with three more runs in the eighth to take an 11-8 lead.  Junior third baseman Nick Popescu drove in two of the three runs with a two-run double to left center.

Chad Bettis (6-3), despite allowing four runs on six hits, picked up the win in relief for Texas Tech by going the final 3 2/3 innings.  Brett Bollman took the loss for Kansas and fell to 1-4.
