LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – The head of Iraq's largest financial institution was once a Lubbock resident. Texas Tech graduate Hussein Al-Uzri is the head of the Trade Bank of Iraq. Al-Uzri returned last week for a visit.
"It's always been my dream to come back to Lubbock and Texas Tech and see the great development that has happened here," says, Al-Uzri. "It's been almost 25 years. Next month, will be 25 years since I graduated."
Al-Uzri says establishing the Trade Bank of Iraq was difficult due to years of international sanctions and an economy that had been battered by 30 years of wars. A written statement says the bank has $100 million in capital and $6.1 billion in total assets. It was created to serve as a catalyst for economic development.
