City election war of words; Beane blasts Hernandez statement

By James Clark | email

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) –  City Councilman Paul R. Beane denies statements that he recruited someone to run against fellow Council Member Linda DeLeon. Monday morning Victor Hernandez sent out a statement saying Beane and others recruited Glen Robertson to run in District 1.

Hernandez' statement was widely distributed to media outlets and local political figures.  However, Beane says it's just not true. Beane says he never recruited anyone and "I was surprised to learn I had so much political influence in Lubbock."

Beane says he only learned that Robertson was running after his official announcement.  Beane says it's a District 1 issue and he had nothing to do with it.

Robertson says, "I'm not anybody's recruited candidate."

DeLeon endorsed Robertson Monday, which was the impetus for Hernandez' written statement.  It says in part, "Councilwoman DeLeon has chosen to endorse a candidate who she knows was recruited to run against her by individuals in this City who dislike her intensely."

It turns out DeLeon is not running for re-election. That means Robertson is not running against her but instead is facing Hernandez and Rafael Gutierrez in a three-way race.
