LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Did you know that zero calorie and low calorie sweet alternatives are actually much sweeter than sugar? According to a study at Stoney Brook Medical Center in New York by adding those to your diet, you may actually be sabotaging any weight loss.
"Although the intent for most people is to decrease calorie intake, for most of the patients I work with, it doesn't end up happening that way," said Josephine Connely-Schoonen, with Stoney Brook Medical Center. "It really seems to perpetuate the desire for sweet and lead to more cravings.
Dr. Connelly-Schoonen suggests the best way to break the sweetener habit is to go back to using natural sugar, for example in your coffee. Then slowly cut back because she says most people find it's easier to cut back on real sugar than sweeteners.
