Grass fire near Smyer threatens home

Posted:

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The wind was not a friend of firefighters near Smyer on Thursday. A large grass fire broke out on the north side of Smyer around 6 p.m. Crews from Levelland and Smyer responded to the blaze since some area homes were threatened.

Resident Dewayne Wiseman fought the flames approaching his home with a garden hose but says the wind made it hard. "It started out between here and the highway but with the wind blowing it got around our house and took off," he said.

Fire crews were able to get the fire under control and save the home and animals. Wiseman says teamwork is what saved his house. "They're great, these grass fires can get out of control so fast. Smyer and Levelland has always worked real well together if one of them needs help the other one comes. They're great," adds Wiseman.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
