Military mom returns home and surprises her children at school

PLAINVIEW, TX (KCBD) - Two of the hardest jobs in the world are being a soldier and being a mom, but Connie McGuire manages to do both.

Combat boots walked through the door of Mesa Elementary school Friday morning.  McGuire sat down beside her 4-year-old son Christian and shocked silence turned into joyful laughter, mixed with a few tears.  "I just wanted to hold them," she said.

McGuire is a single mom who loves her two boys, but she also loves her country. Almost a year ago she left for a tour of duty in Afghanistan. "When we got back to our tent, I would put sweatshirts behind my back because this one usually sleeps behind me," said McGuire.

McGuire missed her youngest son's first day of school, but Friday morning she got to catch up on lost time when she surprised him in his Pre-K classroom.  Then, hand in hand, they walked to second grade to see her older son, Javier.

Javier was sitting quietly at his desk, but his face lit up and he jumped out of his chair when he saw his mom. "She's great. Perfect. She's trying to save the whole country," said Javier.

The boys have stayed with their grandma since McGuire left. "The kids, they have to be brave too. You know, because their life is changing also," said Christy McClain.

McGuire is only half way through her 8 years of service, so she could get deployed again, but for now, while mom is home, they have big plans to enjoy all the little things.
