LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – There is now an option for medical patients who need the prescription benefits of marijuana, but without the debilitating side effects that come with getting high. There is a newly identified strain of cannabis that experts say is high in the healing compound called CBD, but low in the substance that brings a buzz. David Lampach is the researcher who actually identified the strain.

"We thought, 'Wow here's a whole new angle on cannabis we really never knew existed, I think there's a lot of people who need cannabis for their medical conditions and don't want to get high and for those people, CBD is a very good thing," said David Lampach, a researcher.

While research on CBD is still limited, Lampach says this is like striking gold. He admits more study is needed though before this new strain of cannabis can be available to patients.

"One of the great benefits of CBD rich medicine is that we're able to deliver the medical effects of cannabis to patients without the psychoactive affects, which many patients see as undesirable side effects," said Steve DeAngelo, who dispenses medical marijuana.
