LUBBOCK, Texas – Junior right-hander Bobby Doran struckout a career-high 16 batters and held Missouri to just three runs on nine hits over 8 1/3 innings to lead Texas Tech to a 5-4 win over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field. The win evens this series at 1-1 heading into tomorrow's rubber match which is set for noon.
The win gives Texas Tech a 25-22 overall record and pushes the Red Raiders back into third place in the Big 12 Conference standings with an 11-9 record. Missouri dropped to 23-18 overall and to 7-9 in the league.
Doran recorded his 16th strikeout of the game when he sat down Eric Garica swinging as the leadoff hitter in the top of the ninth. Jonah Schmidt wouldn't allow Doran to go the distance as he reached on a one-out single and Tech head coach Dan Spencer then went to his bullpen for closer Chad Bettis.
Bettis, who had pitched three innings in last night's 12-8 11-inning loss, walked the first batter he faced before striking out Ryan Ampleman for the second out. Bettis then gave up another walk to Micahel Liberto to load the bases for Ryan Gebhart.
Gebhart then made things interesting as he drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle and all of a sudden the Tigers had the tying run 90 feet away with their best hitter Aaron Senne up to bat. Bettis, however, retired Senne on a groundball to shortstop Joey Kenworthy and that ended the game and gave Bettis his ninth save of the year.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Red Raider offense went to work and finally got ahead of Missouri starter Nick Tepesch. Senior center fielder Taylor Ashby, who reached on a fielder's choice, ended up scoring the tying run on an RBI groundout by Kenworthy. Freshman first baseman Barrett Barnes then delivered a two-run home run to left field that gave the Red Raiders a 4-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
Tech added what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Kenworthy. The RBI was his second of the game and pushed the Red Raider lead to 5-2.
With the win, Doran improved to 4-2 on the year and 4-1 in Big 12 Conference play. Nick Tepesch was saddled with the loss for Missouri as he allowed five runs on 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings.
