LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – West Texas Census workers mourn the loss of two co-workers after a deadly car crash Friday.
Merlyn David Millsap, 67, of Levelland, and Sara Pierce, 31, of Brownfield had been to the Midland Census office to pick up materials. On their way back to Lubbock, officials say Millsap did not stop at a stop sign. Millsap and Pierce both died.
Charlie Spence, Regional Census Director, is quoted by the Midland Reporter-Telegram as saying, "David and Sara were really excited, as were we, about getting ready to go out in the field".
Spence is also quoted by the Reporter-Telegram as saying, "It's one of the most devastating things you can imagine to be with those people in the morning and then they're gone in the afternoon."
KCBD NewsChannel 11 did check with the DPS office in Lubbock to see if there was some explanation for Millsap not stopping at the stop sign. DPS said there was no explanation in their official report.
