Texas Execution Halted on Final Day

An appeals court in New Orleans halted Wednesday's scheduled execution of convicted killer Robert Charles Ladd. Ladd was convicted for the 1996 beating death of Vickie Ann Gardner of Tyler the circuit court of appeals made its ruling Wednesday after attorneys found juvenile records that indicated Ladd was described as mentally retarded.

Ladd, now 46, was scheduled to be executed Tuesday night in Huntsville. Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that mentally retarded people may not be executed.
