Undercover Agent Behind Tulia Drug Bust Indicted

A Swisher County Grand Jury has indicted the lone undercover agent in the controversial 1999 Tulia drug busts.

Tom Coleman was indicted on three counts of Aggravated Perjury for allegedly lying on the witness stand during hearings last month. The hearings were ordered by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.

Coleman was testifying about evidence he gathered during a drug bust that put 46 people in jail, 39 of whom were black. On April 2nd, a judge recommended the convictions stemming from that drug bust be thrown out, and because of this case, state lawmakers are now considering bills that would require undercover officers to gather more evidence in order to prosecute drug cases.
